Design Background & Inspirations

Suzanne’s inspiration, Millie’s Daughter’s owner and Interior Designer, was her mother, Millie, now deceased, who had a natural talent for interior decorating. “I recall my Mom saying, ‘If I had a home that was a matchbox, I could make it feel like a palace.’ She loved decorating & avidly studied design. Architectural Digest was always on the coffee table or night stand. Scouring through the issues for ideas and then work the high end style into the family budget was always her goal.” Suzanne's daily home life was surrounded in fabrics, design, and style.

Her grandmother, another strong influence was a seamstress. Angelica created with great ease-- slipcovers, draperies or dresses in the 1930’s & 1940’s and for years to come. A very gifted yet humble woman who could scan any garment with her ‘eye’, adapt its design, create a pattern and make a beautiful quality finished product. Textures, fabric and color were a very strong part of daily family life for three generations.

As part of the family culture, Suzanne began needle arts with embroidery and sewing. She continued to expand her knowledge and skill throughout her adolescence into adulthood. She designed and sewed her first window treatments at age 12. However, intrigued by the multicultural environment in which she lived, Suzanne’s passion was the study of foreign languages & cultures. After a successful international & corporate business career, Suzanne returned to college to study Interior Design and opened her own business in 2003.

This passion combined with familial influences has created a unique and eclectic offering.

Follow Your Passion

After September 11,2001, many of us working in NYC and elsewhere thought about changing our lives. I began searching for what I truly wanted to do with the rest of my life. After two years of research, I opened Millie's Daughter Designs, a home accessories retail business. I started out in a little shop on the east end of Long Island. Later, I expanded the store, offering decorative painting classes. Life was good, but, I had a compelling desire to do something more.

One summer day in 2005, I just happen to look into the local college catalog. The description of an Interior Design class caught my eye. I never paid much attention to this field before, but, the more I read, the more I realized my business background, talents and interests, and even my passion for languages and cultures had a common thread with the interior design. The education and training has helped me with product selection, sourcing and trends.

Following my passion has taken me down a path of continuous learning and discovery in the very diverse field of interior design. Life has been so adventurous and wonderful. I count my blessings every day!
